As I write this, I'm on my way back from Orlando where I ran the Walt Disney World marathon with my daughter Sarah.  Talk about a fun marathon!  Just under 20,000 of us ran past all the Disney characters, marching bands, a choir in full robes, green army soldiers from Toy Story barking orders at us and through all 4 theme parks including Cinderella's castle.

We started at 5:30 am to a sky filled with colourful fireworks.  Many runners dressed up as Disney characters including Sarah, who was Snow White.  It was extrememly humid (98% humidity).  I spoke to a runner at the end of the marathon who was dressed as Woody.  He had an awesome costume!  He said the hardest part for him was that the extreme humidity had caused him to sweat so much that his hat must have weighed at least 5 pounds.  Someone else said they felt like they "hit the wall" at 50 meters into the run beacuse of the humidity!

Although I was 6 minutes behind my last marathon time, I was pleased to find out that I had finished 3rd out of 559 men in my age category.  Not bad for an old guy, eh?!

Next up is the Boston Marathon in April.  Woo hoo!

I found out last week that I qualified for the Boston marathon next April!  I've been running for a couple of years.  My first marathon wasn't pretty, in that I "hit the wall", but I learned from it and did much better in my second one in May.  The time required to qualify for Boston varies by age category (there have to be some advantages to getting older) and also changes from year to year depending on how many people apply and how fast they are.  The next one is the 120th anniversary so more people applied.  I managed to just sneak in by 18 seconds!  But I made it and I'll be heading there in April with two of my children, Sarah and Andrew, to cheer me on.

My next marathon is in three weeks.  It's the Road2Hope in Hamilton.  Hopefully I'll have an even better time in this one, so I can qualify for Boston again in 2017!  That's all for now.  Gotta run!  :)

I was at a course today which included an update in the morning on local anesthetics, and an update in the afternoon on cardiovascular emergencies.  It was presented by a dentist who is also a professor at a large U.S. university. and is known as a "guru' on these topics.  I actually saw a dentist posing for a picture with him using a Selfie Stick while other dentists crowded around to get their picture taken with him as well.  I guess he' s a dental rock star!

It was a very informative and interesting lecture, which was great considering topics like this can sometimes be quite "dry" and, trust me, I've been to my fair share of boring lectures.  I always love learning about and then implementing what's new in dentistry.  That's what keeps it fun!

I'm taking a few days off this week, and I couldn't have asked for nicer weather.  But next week I'm back at it again!

I'm sad to say that next week is Iris' last week with us after eight years.  Iris and Odalmis are my two assistants.  The three of us work really well together, whether it's in the office or on one of our yearly mission trips to El Salvador or Guatemala.  But Iris was rear-ended in a car accident a few years ago and assisting is proving to be too demanding on her body so she is going back to school to take Business Marketing.  We wish her all the best and we'll certainly miss her!

Christina will be joining us.  She is a certified level II dental assistant who has also worked more recently as a dental lab technician.  I'm looking forward to learning from her since her experience will help take us to an even higher level of patient care.  Christina has a warm personality.  I think you'll like her!

Nickel-titanium is an alloy which is a roughly 50/50 mix of the two metals.  What makes it so special is it's elastic properties, specifially the way it can bend without breaking and then return to it's original shape.  This has two particularly useful applications in dentistry.

The first is in root canal treatment.  The root canal in a tooth runs through the centre of the root.  When the nerve is dead or dying, the tooth can be saved in most cases by cleaning out this hollow area where the nerve resides, and then sealing it to prevent bacteria from re-colonizing it.  Nickel-titanium files are used for this cleaning and shaping process because they will conform to the shape of the canal without breaking or inappropriately altering the shape of the canal.  They have revolutionized root canal treatment because of their safety and flexibility in following the shape of a curved canal, even extremely curved canals.

The second major application of nickel-titanium files is in orthodontic treatment.  They are uselful as the arch wire, which is the wire that attaches to your braces.   It forms the path along which your teeth move into the correct position.  These wires allow the orthodontist to control the movements of the teeth into their desired positions.  The wire, when warmed by the patient's mouth, will want to return to it's original shape, which just so happens to be the shape of the arch that the orthodontist desires.

Nickel-titanium - a wonderful metal with amazing applications for dentistry.
