Here we go again.  Forgive me for being cynical, but I think there’s more to this contest than meets the eye.

In a nutshell, you go online and vote for your favourite business in each category and then after a couple of weeks, winners are announced.

In reality, it’s got to be an incredibly profitable “contest” for the newspapers because here’s how it works:

Every year, I’m in the running.  I’m not sure why I get nominated, but I suspect it may have to do with the fact that I have advertised in the paper before.  Once you are nominated, you get an email encouraging you to place an ad thanking the readers for nominating you.  Ka-ching.  There are many, many categories.  Ka-ching.  If I owned the newspaper, I’d hire someone full-time to think up as many categories as possible.  Then each category has multiple winners such as platinum, diamond, gold, silver, bronze, wood, rock, sand etc.  OK, maybe there aren’t that many categories, but it seems like it.      Ka-ching.  Then each winner is congratulated by an email from the newspaper and encouraged to place an ad thanking everyone for their votes.  Ka-ching.  It’s brilliant.

So last year I got gold which meant “thanks for nominating me” and “thanks for voting for me” ads.  And I didn’t even ask my parents to vote for me.  Heck, I didn’t even vote for myself!

But I must confess that it stirs the competitive spirit within me.  I don’t want gold, I want platinum!  I want krypton!  Hmmm.. Maybe my Mom and Dad might make the difference this year.  Gotta go!
